Ellington Thorpe (Modern)
Ellington includes the pretty little hamlet of
Ellington Thorpe which used to be know as Sibthorpe. The parish
gives its name to a small river south of which it stands. A moat
surrounds the site of the demolished manor house of Sibthorpe. The
village of Ellington contains a number of attractive 17th century
cottages and the Old Mermaid Inn. The father of Samuel Pepys lived
in Ellington for some time.
Although partly rebuilt, the church displays much good
Decorated work and has a chancel arch a century older. There are
fine 15th century roofs to the nave and aisles, the carved
timberwork being supported by figures of angels. The 14th century
tower, which is surmounted by a tapering stone spire, carries two
bells which have been ringing now for well over 300 years.
Ellington is one of the parishes of the District of
Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is
Huntingdon, the other principle towns being
St Ives
home of the Chapel on the Bridge,
St Neots
the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of
Godmanchester and
Ramsey
site of the former Abbey.
